NXVision demonstrates the world’s first embedded placeshifting technology for STBs at IBC 2008
September 12, 2008
NXVISION LTD, a digital media solutions company based in Scotland, will demonstrate the first example of placeshifting technology embedded in a Set-Top Box (STB) at IBC 2008, held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Placeshifting technology enables users to easily access content from their STB and then provide this content to different devices, such as a laptop or mobile phone for viewing anytime, anywhere. The embedded solution will be shown on a high performance set-top box solution from NXP Semiconductors, within the NXP meeting room in Hall 1.
NXVision Ltd is the leading provider of secure placeshifting solutions to its business partners. The NXVision secure placeshifting system allows users access to set-top box content (live and pre-recorded) from anywhere, in-home or around the world. The system takes broadcast quality audio and video, modifies to be more suited for a portable device, and sends to an authorised connected device. The system is point to point, allowing full dynamic control of quality of service, and allowing the service to be easily scaled without the need for new broadcast infrastructure. The embedded software manages all of the transcoding and transrating requirements as well as the dynamic control of quality of service. The content is fully protected as it uses the existing Conditional Access (CA) in the STB, and mobile DRM where required, allowing full visibility and control of content movement.
As well as the embedded placeshifting technology being demonstrated at IBC, NXVision also supplies both the software for mobile devices, as well as managing the service to ensure that it is simple for the end customer to use at all times.
“In this new era of viewing content anytime, anywhere, one of the main challenges to consumers is how to get their video content onto a range of devices, both in home, and wherever they are The key to delivering a simple, yet secure solution, is to have placeshifting as a function within the set-top box”, said Dr Glenn Craib, NXVision CTO.
“The demonstration with NXVision at IBC shows how placeshifting can be easily integrated into an existing STB platform,” said Alan Smith, Director, Satellite Operator Product Line, NXP Semiconductors. “Having this technology inside the STB expands the services that operators could offer to their customers as with this solution they will be able to enjoy their content also outside the home, This feature adds a new dimension to our DTV and STB solutions to improve the TV viewing experience by allowing access to more content, with better picture and sound quality, anytime/anywhere using as less power as possible”
NXVision will demonstrate this technology within the NXP Semiconductors suite at IBC 2008 (NXP meeting room, Hall 1)
